WHY TURKISH?

March 6th, 2009 by

Turkish is one of the approximately 30 languages that make up the Turkic language family. Turkic languages are spoken in the large area from Eastern Europe to Siberia to Western China. It is an ancient language that has a history of more than 5,000 years.

Approximately 200 million people in the World speak a Turkic language

Turkic languages are spoken in Turkey, in the Balkans in countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, and Romania…

Due to migrants in Western Europe, Australia, and the Americas,… in Iraq, Iran,  and Azerbaijan … and in central Asian republics such as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kirgizstan, Kazakhstan

Turkish is designated by the US state department as a critical language of strategic importance.

Because of Turkey’s strategic position between Europe, Middle East, and Asia and  because of Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union,  it’s historical ties with Muslim countries,  and because of the rich history that Turkey hosts, Turkish is becoming a popular language.

Turkish population in the US is growing rapidly with an estimated 300,000 including 10,000 university students and 1,000 academicians.

Here is one local example of the popularity of Turkish … The Center of Middle Eastern Studies here at UT is currently interviewing candidates … for a professorship position in the Turkish language they are committed to increase the strength of the center in the Turkish language and culture by adding more positions.

The Turkic Cultures Student Association is working … to introduce Turkic cultures to the UT community, to provide a meeting place and a learning environment for those interested in Turkic cultures, and to bring together students, staff, and faculty belonging to the different Turkic cultures. One among many great works of TCSA is 9-week Turkish class offered to Austenite at no cost. Thanks TCSA!
